FLINT, Mich. — The Greater Flint African American Sports Hall of Fame highlights local black athletes from the high school level all the way up to the professional level. The hall is run by a committee and dates back to 1983 and has since inducted 38 classes of inspirational black athletes from Flint.
From individual players to coaches and even entire teams as a whole, Flint has tons of sports history in its foundation. However, outside of local fans that history can sometimes be forgotten, but that’s where the Greater Flint African American Sports Hall of Fame comes in.
“We needed to do something to recognize our African American men and women student athletes. They needed to be recognized for everything that they have done. So much black history when you’re in school, it’s not in the history books, It’s hidden. and what we’re able to do concerning the student athletes in our community is put all that on display and let these individuals know you are not forgotten,” said Anthony Alexander, President of the Greater Flint African American Sports Hall of Fame.
Hosted inside the Gloria Coles Flint Public Library the Greater Flint African American Sports Hall of Fame has a dedicated kiosk and video display for those in the community looking to learn more about Flint’s sports history.
The kiosk list all the information of each individual athlete throughout the years including the schools they attended, record they’ve broken and the teams they’ve played for throughout their career.
Alexander hopes young athletes within the community are able to visit the display, read more about their sports hero’s and come to realize they can be just like them.
“In history, you have to find out, you have to realize what was done before you got here, okay, and then continue to carry that torch forward,” said Alexander.
