You were mistaken if you thought that Oleynik would end his fantastic career after leaving the UFC. Judging by the latest interviews, Aleksei looks physically and mentally cheerful, and recent failures have not broken him at all.
He has won only once in the UFC over the past couple of years (with four defeats), but that victory over Jared Vanderaa was classic in his performance. It was in April last year. Then there was another unsuccessful fight to which Oleynik came out completely unprepared (for reasons beyond his control) and lost by a judicial decision to Ilir Latifi.
Oli Thompson is the same veteran, 43 years old, but that’s all he has in common with Oleinik. The former champion of Great Britain in power extreme, Thompson earned a little fame in MMA – he fought twice in the UFC (in 2012 and lost both times ahead of schedule) and fought twice in Bellator (in 2017, the result was the same).
Thompson lost his last four fights, having flown into deaf knockouts three times, while he does not perform in the top leagues. This offensive series for Oli was started by Sergey Kharitonov, who unexpectedly destroyed Thompson in the first round.
No, Oleinik will not want to play in public. He is not at that age – and the first parterre will end badly for Thompson. Even with much lower-level wrestlers, he looked disagreeable in this part of the fight, so there is no need to worry about Aleksei here.
