A real clash of styles is forecast on Wednesday in Milton Keynes where Germany, who have arguably looked the most complete team at Euro 2022, take on their mercurial French neighbours.
Germany took nine points from their three Group B games before dismissing Austria 2-0 in the quarter-finals. France topped Group D, but had to rely on an extra-time penalty in the last eight, as Eve Perisset’s 102nd-minute strike eventually took them past defending champions the Netherlands.
While Germany are eyeing a ninth European title, Wednesday’s semi-final marks the furthest Les Bleus have ever been in this competition. Will their talent finally shine through? Or, as has happened so often before, will Germany do what is needed to get a result?

Germany have shown during the Euros they are happy to change their tactics as the game demands. They can both dominate the ball and play without it and the latter is likely to be Wednesday’s plan.
Like their male counterparts, France’s women are often happiest when running at their opponents, using their dazzling ability to create space.
Can they break sides down when the onus is on them to make the play? The jury is out on the evidence of that narrow win over the Dutch.
While they had 25 shots in that game and Dutch keeper Daphne van Domseelar was in inspired form, the French lacked a cutting edge at times and failed to hit the target with almost half of their efforts.
Chances are unlikely to be as forthcoming against Germany and France’s profligacy in front of goal could decide the game.
Tip: Germany to win @ 8/5 with William Hill
Doing enough to get through is what semi-finals are all about and a single goal could decide the game. That was enough for France in the quarters but it might be a case of roles reversed here.
Although both were friendlies, the previous two meetings between these sides were decided by a one-goal scoreline, with each nation claiming a 1-0 victory.
A tense game is forecast and that would suit Germany, who have form on this front. They won all three knockout games 1-0 on their way to Euro glory in 2013 and may edge it by a single strike again.
Tip: Germany to by exactly one goal @ 3/1 with William Hill
Germany captain Alexandra Popp already has an Olympic gold medal, a Fifa U-20 World Cup winner’s medal plus multiple Champions League and Frauen-Bundesliga titles on her CV – but missed out on the Euros in both 2013 and 2017 due to injury.
If this tournament hadn’t been postponed from 2021, she would have missed out again with a knee injury. As it is, the Wolfsburg striker is in England and in form, coming off the bench to score on her Euros debut in the 4-0 win over Denmark and has gone on to net against Spain, Finland and Austria.
As of writing, Popp’s tally of four goals is the second-highest in the tournament behind England’s Beth Mead and, after winning her battle with injuries, she says she is keen to make up for lost time.
The 31-year-old says her team’s goal is to “create something long-lasting, globally and in Germany” and having seemingly won the argument to start ahead of Lea Schuller, she could well find the net for the fifth straight game.
Tip: Alexandra Popp – Anytime goalscorer @ 5/2 with William Hill
