A discount furniture, mattress and appliance store is preparing to shut down in Aiken’s Kalmia Plaza shopping center.

“Everything must go,” according to signs posted on the front doors of American Freight at 1680 Richland Ave. W.

All of the American Freight retail chain’s more than 300 locations nationwide are closing after its parent company, Franchise Group Inc., filed for bankruptcy protection.

Franchise Group is shutting down the American Freight stores because of a restructuring agreement with lenders that was announced in November.

Hilco Consumer-Retail is managing the American Freight going-out-of-business sales.

Franchise Group also owns other retail brands, including The Vitamin Shoppe and Pet Supplies Plus.

The Vitamin Shop and Pet Supplies Plus stores will remain open, and so will the Buddy’s Home Furnishings retail locations.

According to a Franchise Group news release, American Freight “has struggled due to sustained inflation and macroeconomic challenges facing the large durable goods sector.”

The franchised locations of Franchise Group’s brands aren’t part of the bankruptcy proceedings, the release stated.

At the time of Franchise Group’s bankruptcy filing, there were 10 American Freight stores in South Carolina.
