In the first week of August, the 31st of the year, the tournaments not to be missed.
Challenge Tour – Vierumäki Finnish Challenge
From 4 to 7 August the Road to Mallorca champions travel to Finland, at the Vierumäki Resort, PAR 72 of 6,411 meters, for the Vierumäki Finnish Challenge.
The first edition of the tournament was held in 2001 on the Talma Golf course, but over the years the competition has changed course several times, stopping in Vierumäki only since 2016. About a 90-minute drive from Helsinki, in a beautiful setting of woods and lakes, the Cooke Course at Vierumäki Resort will host the Finnish Challenge for the sixth time.
As one of the northernmost countries in Europe, Finland offers some unique environmental challenges for organizing a golf tournament. Due to the daylight hours, the typical golf season usually lasts between May and September, with long, bright summer days that can be exploited.
At last year’s event, Marcus Helligkilde won with a result of 23 under PAR, taking his first title on the Challenge Tour. The defending champion then took two more wins on the European Tour and secured the DP World Tour card for the season 2022.
Attendees at this week’s event hope to follow in Helligkilde’s footsteps. Among the champions on the field the experts are ready to bet on the Finnish Kim Koivu, who won the Vierumäki Finnish Challenge in 2018, beating the Scottish Robert McIntyre in a playoff.
Koivu is on the field this week along with other Finns, including Oliver Lindell, Matias Honkala and Ilari Saulo. In the field, for a prize money of 250 thousand euros, we also find seven Azzurri: Luca Cianchetti, Giacomo Fortini, Michele Ortolani, Jacopo Vecchi Fossa, Federico Maccario, Edoardo Raffaele Lipparelli and Filippo Bergamaschi.
DP World Tour – Cazoo Open supported by Gareth Bale
From 4 to 7 August, world football superstar Gareth Bale will support the Cazoo Open at Celtic Manor Resort, with the return of the Wales National Golf Open at the Twenty Ten Course.
Bale, who has made 100 appearances for Wales, is a golf enthusiast and, after giving his support to the Cazoo Open in 2021, the 32-year-old will again be supporting this year’s event. The DP World Tour champions thus return to the UK for the 5th time, with the tournament best known (at least in the past) as the Wales Open.
Played on the purpose built course for the Ryder Cup at Celtic Manor, the tournament has “only” 22 years of history, with 16 editions played.
The original Wentwood Hills course was used from 2000 to 2004, then, during renovations for the 2010 Ryder Cup, the shorter Roman Road course was used for three years. Following the Ryder Cup, however, the competition is back on the most famous course and so will be this week too.
Celtic Manor 2010 was the first (and for now only) course built specifically to host the Ryder Cup: several natural amphitheaters were built for spectators and human interventions on nature are evident. The champions will compete for a prize pool of 1 million and 750 thousand US dollars.
Defending champion is Nacho Elvira, who last year started the final round with a six-shot lead, but had a hard-fought final round (71 shots) with South African Justin Harding (65 shots). The Spanish champion nevertheless managed to take home the victory on the first hole of the playoff and will be on the field this year to defend his title.
Among the favorites there is also the Belgian Thomas Detry, among the highest rated with good reason: the 29-year-old has not yet won an individual title on the DP World Tour. This is Detry’s first appearance at Celtic Manor, but the modern path should be suitable for a modern professional.
The blues on the pitch will be: amateur Filippo Celli. winner of the European Amateur Championship, Francesco Laporta, Edoardo Molinari, Renato Paratore, Lorenzo Gagli and Lorenzo Scalise. We will be able to see the tournament, from 4 to 7 August on GOLFTV / DISCOVERY + and EUROSPORT, with the comments of Isabella Calogero and Federico Colombo on the following programming: DATA GOLFTV – Discovery Plus EUROSPORT
