Today’s Horse Racing Tips

For today’s horse racing tips, our analyst James Boyle looks at the flat racing meetings at Goodwood and Haydock, with three selections now online.

15:15 Haydock – Princess Shabnam – 1pt @ 12/1

Princess Shabnam is yet to find her true level of form so far this season but was hinting that she mightn’t be a million miles off it when just a few lengths behind Azure Blue at Newmarket a few weeks ago. Having went into the lead early, I thought she did plenty on the front end and the first three home came from positions towards the rear of the field, which would also back up that thought process.

It was much better than what she produced at Bath (over a furlong shorter) and returning to a flatter track on a quicker surface could see her kicking on again. She’s already a winner at this level having defeated Gale Force Maya last August and a reproduction of the figure achieved there makes her a big player in this. Whether she can get back to that is the issue but 10/1 or bigger is fair enough.

15:35 Goodwood – Nizaaka – 1pt @ 5/1

Nizaaka was hugely progressive in the early part of last season after joining Jane Chapple-Hyam’s yard, going down by a short-head on her stable debut at Newbury before landing a hat-trick of handicap wins on the July course. Tilts at getting some black-type followed and she was only beaten a couple of lengths into fourth in a Group 3 at Doncaster, which helps to show just how talented she is.

Connections then headed for Meydan and on her third (and final) run there she was beaten a length in a handicap off 2lbs higher than today. She didn’t take the eye in the paddock before her Lingfield run a couple of weeks ago and ran accordingly, but that was a Group 3 and even at her best, she wouldn’t have finished much closer than fourth. This is her level and if she’s fully fit, she’ll be involved.

16:45 Goodwood – Lihou – 1pt @ 9/2

Lihou is a fantastic horse who has served David Evans well and since the turn of the year, he has brought his winning tally up to ten races by scoring in four handicaps. On his peak form from a couple of years ago, he’s still on a good mark of 84 (8lbs below his highest) and I thought he did well from 2lbs out of the weights to run third to Nymphadora and King’s Lynn at Chester two weeks back.

They were just too classy for him to cope with in the finish and given the state of the surface, he may have been committed for home plenty early enough as well. Quicker conditions here do pose an element of risk as he likes some cut underfoot, but it was fast when he won his sole race in 2022 and hopefully the ground won’t be a problem. If he runs to his recent levels, he is going to be a contender.
