The Cinema Series at the 1891 Fredonia Opera House Performing Arts Center continues with
the Oscar-nominated “American Fiction.” It will be screened on Saturday and Tuesday at 7:30p.m.
Nominated for five Oscars including for Best Picture, “American Fiction” is Cord Jefferson’s hilarious directorial debut, which confronts our culture’s obsession with reducing people to outrageous stereotypes. Jeffrey Wright stars as Monk, a frustrated novelist who is fed up with the establishment profiting from “Black” entertainment that relies on tired and offensive tropes.
To prove his point, Monk uses a pen name to write an outlandish “Black” book of his own, a book that propels him to the heart of hypocrisy and the madness he claims to disdain.
RogerEbert.com calls the film a “whip-smart, nimble satire.” The London Evening Standard calls it “a well-deserved best picture contender.” TIME Magazine calls it “a complex, sometimes discomfiting pleasure.” The Detroit News says “Wright, so often a strong supporting player… is magnetic in the lead role: commanding, flawed, vulnerable, relatable. ‘American Fiction’ is his movie, and deservedly land(ed) him his first Oscar nomination.” Rated R for sexual references, language throughout, brief violence and some drug use,
“American Fiction” runs one hour, 57 minutes. Tickets are available at the door for $7 (adults), $6.50 (seniors & Opera House members) and $5 (students) the night of each screening. The Opera House is equipped with assistive listening headsets for the hearing-impaired. Simply request one from any usher or staff member.
The Opera House Cinema Series is generously sponsored by Lake Shore Savings Bank. Inaddition, Opera House programming is made possible by the United Arts Appeal of Chautauqua County.
