Legendary NFL quarterback Tom Brady reportedly may have to wait even longer than anticipated to see if he is approved to purchase an ownership stake in the Las Vegas Raiders.
According to Mark Maske of the Washington Post, sources indicated that it is unclear if NFL owners will vote this month on the subject of Brady joining the Raiders’ ownership group.
Maske added that the NFL owner meetings are set to take place in Nashville, Tennessee, on May 21 and 22.
Raiders owner Mark Davis first announced nearly one year ago that an agreement had been reached for Brady to buy a minority ownership stake in the franchise.
Speaking in March at the NFL league meeting, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell told reporters he felt the league was “making progress” with regard to approving Brady.
Brady, 46, played for the New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers over the course of his illustrious, 23-year career.
In addition to being the NFL’s all-time leader in passing yardage and passing touchdowns, Brady won an unprecedented seven Super Bowls and was a five-time Super Bowl MVP and three-time NFL MVP.
Brady initially retired after the 2021 season, but he reversed course a few months later and decided to return to play for the Bucs in 2022.
After Tampa won the NFC South with an 8-9 record and got ousted in the NFC Wild Card Round of the playoffs, Brady called it quits for good.
Brady stepped away from football entirely last season, but in 2024, he is set to begin his new career as the top NFL analyst for Fox Sports.
Given the fact that Brady will be expected to provide impartial analysis with Fox, it is fair to wonder if that impending role is having any impact on the league delaying its decision on whether to approve him as an owner.
Also, during an appearance on the Deep Cut podcast (h/t ESPN’s Mike Reiss) last month, Brady said he is “not opposed” to the idea of coming back to play should a team dealing with quarterback injuries call him during the season.
However, Brady acknowledged that he is unsure if he would be allowed to play in the event that he is approved as an owner.
Should Brady’s ownership bid hit a snag or get delayed even further, perhaps it increases the odds of him ending his retirement.
